Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

September 01, 2025

Important Notice: After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10. While your PC may continue to function, it will no longer receive vital security updates or technical support, leaving your device—and your business—at risk.

Why Business Owners Must Act Now

  • Increased Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your systems become prime targets for viruses, malware, and cyberattacks, jeopardizing your sensitive business data.
  • Software Incompatibility: As developers update applications to align with newer operating systems, your current software may slow down or stop working after Windows 10 support ends.
  • Regulatory Compliance Risks: Operating on outdated software can lead to compliance violations, potentially resulting in costly fines or legal troubles, especially if you handle sensitive information.

What Are Your Upgrade Options?

Microsoft strongly recommends upgrading to the latest Windows version prior to the cutoff date. However, not all Windows 10 devices meet the strict hardware requirements for Windows 11. Attempting an incompatible upgrade will trigger error messages.

If your device can't run Windows 11, consider these alternatives:

  • Purchase a new PC fully compatible with Windows 11
  • Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) to temporarily maintain support
  • Transition to a Linux operating system
  • Do not ignore the deadline and risk exposing your business—this option is strongly discouraged.

Reminder: Before proceeding with any upgrade or switch, always back up your important files to safeguard against data loss.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10

If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, you can opt for Microsoft's Extended Security Updates, providing security patches for up to one year beyond the October 2025 end date. Remember, ESU is a temporary fix, not a permanent solution.

ESU registration is simple—pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. Alternatively, a no-cost option exists if you enable Windows Backup and sync your settings and files to OneDrive's cloud storage. Keep in mind, OneDrive's free 5 GB may require expansion if you have extensive data.

Act promptly. You must register for ESU before the October 14 deadline to maintain protection.
